What is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint is located on either side of your head just in front of the ears. TMJ occurs when something interferes with the natural motion of this joint, which is hard at work when you chew, talk, and yawn, smile, or laugh out loud. In some cases, the pain is also caused by bruxism, or nighttime teeth grinding and clenching, which exerts unnatural pressure on your teeth. This disorder can also cause discomfort while sleeping and eating and can make daily activities difficult. Call us today and have your individual plan set up by one of our dentists.

How is it Treated?

Splints are designed to fit over the teeth. They prevent the upper and lower teeth from coming together. This makes it difficult for you to grind or clench your teeth. These devices take pressure off the jaw joints and muscles, so they can relax and heal. If your dentist thinks a splint would help you, he or she will determine when you also should wear it (during the day or at night) and for how long. Joy Dental also works with you to create an individualized healing plan based on your unique needs.
